What is Internet ?

The Internet is a globally connected network system that enables access to communications and data resources around the world through a vast collection of private, public, business, educational and government networks. It is managed by agencies called IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) which makes universal protocols.

The terms World Wide Web and Internet are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same, the Internet refers to the global communication system, including hardware and infrastructure, while the Web is one of the services communicated over the Internet.

Detailed explanation about internet

The beginning of Internet is held from U.S.A. (United States) by it's government, which began building a computer network known as ARPANET in the 1960s. In 1985, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) established a development backbone network university called NSFNET.

The system was replaced in 1995 by new networks operated by commercial Internet service providers. The Internet was brought to the public on large scale at this time.

Since then, the Internet has evolved over time and facilitating services such as -
  • E-mail.
  • Web-enabled audio/video conferencing services.
  • Online movies and gaming.
  • Data transfer/file-sharing, often via File Transfer Protocol. (ftp)
  • instant messaging.
  • Internet Forum.
  • social networking.
  • online shopping.
  • financial Services.

As a global network which is responsible for transfer small amount of data, the Internet is constantly evolving. For example, an early protocol called IPv4 Distributing Internet Protocol (IP) addresses has been largely replaced by a newer IPv6 model that would increase the number of addresses available for each continent worldwide.

The Internet has expanded beyond traditional workstations into the "Internet of Things" (IoT). There is still some drawing between traditional Internet nodes that use a classic web browser and Internet-connected devices that would typically use less instruction set software, but the Internet of Things is fading the line where the Internet stops. And the analog world begins.

In addition, there is an important framework that helps people understand how the Internet is changing, and where it is likely to go in the future.

It is made up of three edition iterations of the World Wide Web, as defined below -

  • Web 1.0 : The original form of the Internet as a place where most of the data was read-only. it is frequently described by experts as an Internet where the most usual types of activity are ideal - reading, researching or learning about products and services before making a purchase on traditional media, for example -  buying a telephone.

  • Web 2.0 : Web 2.0 emerged as soon as engineers added things like JavaScript applets and modules to the web. Web 2.0 is the read and write web or functional web, where web fields and forms allow users to participate in transactions, upload resources, or post their own suggestions in active conversations. The problem of "stateless" Web-delivered functionality is largely solved by digital "cookies" trackers that save personal user data in browsers to enable things like saved passwords. When a user clears cookies, that session data is gone, and the user must start over as a new guest in any future sessions.

  • Web 3.0 : What the Internet of the future is called the "Semantic Web", where Internet data has developed relationships and mapping will now help to automate much of what we do manually on the Internet. The Semantic Web would be a web that is automated in many ways by seamlessly linking different virtual objects and websites together. Web 3.0 can help us overcome the current model of using cookies for session data retrieval.

All these changes reflect the general purpose nature of the Internet and its wide scope in human society. Groups such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) continue to work on defining standards and universal approaches.
